RETAIL PROBLEMS
REMOVAL OF CONTROLS “TOO SLOW”
Progress by the Government in removing price control and import restrictions was deplorably slow and the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation was trying to hasten many overdue decisions, the president of the federation (Mr W. J. Court, Whangarei) told a special meeting of the Canterbury Retailers’ Association last evening. Although trading conditions continued to be most buoyant there were still problems of staff shortages, capital restrictions and unnecessary official controls, he said. The retail trade was looking ’for a much more positive policy from the Government. Much had been said of the increasing cost of living, but one obvious way to ensure reduced costs was keener competition allowing freer trade by the abolition of some price control margins that tended to maintain unduly rigid prices, said Mr Court.
