TROTTING Dresden Lady Impresses In Trials At Addington

Conditions wore ideal when the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association held trials at Addington yesterday. There was a good attendance. Dresden Lady, Trueco, Brava, Phantasy and Trojan were among those which impressed most.

The Addington trainer, G. S. Smith, was represented by three winners’ They were Sydney Victor, Gay Cobra and Alert. Sydney Victor, which has yet to race this season, and is a recent addition to Smith's Addington team surprised by winning the Free-for-all event m an interesting finish with Dourglo and Brava. Sydney Victor was towards the rear of the small field until rounding the home turn where he moved up to be on the outside of Brava, Crimea, Dourglo and Poranui. He continued his run to the post, and at the end was a neck clear of Dourglo. Dourglo was slow away and well back m the early running, but he made up ground going through the back straight for the last time, and was disputing the lead coming to the furlong. He was not driven right out and finished a neck in front of Brava’ Brava's effort was very pleasing. He was a little slow at the start, but moved around the field to take the lead with nine furlongs to go He revelled m his task, and held the upper hand until a few strides short of the post. He pulled up well, and » now almost certain to compete at the Forbury Park meeting. Crimea finished close up in fourth place, just clear of Roy Grattan, Peace Pipe and Poranui. The free-for-all was won in 3min 20 th ? leaders paced the last half-mile in Imm 3 l-ssec, and the final two furlongs in 31 l-ssec. Prospect for Methven After being the best to begin in the 3min 29sec class pace event Gay Cobra-was steadied to trail Trueco He worked off the rails half-way down the straight and ran on well to beat Trueco by a head. Gay Cobra is engaged in the McCloy Memorial Handicap at Methven on Saturday. Trueco began well, and he led from the mile and a quarter post. He was pot pressed, and his performance was Lucky Scholar finished on along the inside in the straight, and got up for third placing, half a length clear of Sage Girl. Toronto Boy finished fifth after losing ground at the start, and Ayrland’s Pnde did best of the others. Dresden Lady, a candidate for the sprint race at Methven on Saturday, had little difficulty in winning the second heat of the 3min 29sec class pace event. Driven by Denis Nyhan, younger son of the Templeton trainer, D. G. Nyhan, Dresden Lady began safely from 12 yards, and she took up a position on the rails, not far from the leaders. When an opening came in the straight she quickly shot through, to win going away by two lengths. She paced the mile and a half in 3min 19sec, after covering her last half-mile in Imin ssec. Zulu’s Pride, the pacemaker from the half-mile, easily held second placing by two lengths from Lady Belmer, which did well to secure third placing after breaking badly at the start. Zagar, which was fifth in the running, finished fourth, ahead of Air Command and Reality.

Alert, a member of G. S. Smith’s Addington stable, showed he is in good order for immediate engagements when he finished on solidly to win the 3min 37sec class pace event after enjoying a good run behind the leaders for most of the way. Mighty Shadow, wffich finished second, half a length away, is a four-year-old Young Bob mare, trained at Addington by L. O. Thomas. She qualified at New Brighton last month. Battalion showed great speed to finish third. He broke and lost a long stretch of ground at the start,

Purdons Prebbleton team, led all the way to win the 3min 41sec class tfot■ He made a slight mistake at the start, but most of the field made worse blunders, and at the end of two furlongs he was well clear of his nearest rival. The field closed on him on the home turn, but he did not , av £ to be driven out to win by a length in 3min 32sec, after trotting * as t in Imin ssec. Brau Scott quickly made up his • Ji-yard handicap, and he was always one of the leaders. He trotted solidly right to the post to finish second, a head m front of Dan’s Choice, which had' trailed the leader throughout. Ailsa Craig made up a lot of ground after a slow beginning to finish fourth, a length back, and there was a gap to Lancewood, which led in Jacinta and the breaking With You. The heats for two-year-olds drew small fields. Phantasy gave a fine performance to win the first heat, after breaking and losing about 100 yards at the start. The slow pace early her to recover her handicap, and after following False Step into the straight she finished solidly to beat him by a head. The pace was on only in the last half-mile, which took Imin 1 4-ssec. The final quarter took 30sec. Adoration finished a close third, .and Reason Why was beaten off, last. After being slow away, Suzendy won the second heat in 2min 56sec.
