Wharf Strike Ends In Melbourne
(Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. April 18. Melbourne watersiders r’-' ided today to call off their ■' which paralysed the port for fc Jays. The Waterside Workers leratior at a mass meeting this morning, ck cided to take out a writ in the Hipl Court challenging the disciplinary rowers of the Stevedoring Industry Board.
The strike was called when the board refused to lift two-day suspensions on 300 watersiders pending the hearing of appeals in the Arbitration Court.
Because many watersiders were unaware of today’s decision, some gangs were short-handed and there was a labour shortage. About 20 of the 60 ships in the port are still idle.
Coloured Singer in Vienna.— For the first time in the history of the Vienna Opera, a coloured singer, Camilla William, of the New York City Opera, sang last night. She won tremendous applause for her performance of the title role of the opera “Madame Butterfly.”—Vienna April 17.
