FARM STRIKE IN DENMARK
WORKERS DEMAND SHORTER DAY
(Rec. 8 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, April 17. A lock-out of 70,000 farm and dairy workers, who are demanding a shorter summer working day, began today. Danish housewives tomorrow will receive only a fraction of their usual supplies. Milk and cream were delivered as usual today, and dairy employers have promised to allow enough milk to be supplied to hospitals and small children.
The farm and dairy workers have been claiming a reduction in summer hours from nine a day to eight, and the Farm Workers’ Union called a strike in support. The farmers replied with the lockout, making this labour dispute Denmark’s most serious for many years. Cockell Begins Training.—Don Cockell, the British Empire heavyweight boxing champion, who has been matched to meet Rocky Marciano, world heavy-weight champion, in a bout for the world title in San Francisco on May 16, began training today. Cockell boxed three rounds with a sparring partner and also worked on the heavy and light punching bags.— San Rafael (California), April 17.
