R.S.A. EXECUTIVE
MR J. BRETHERTON RESIGNS ACCEPTANCE DEFERRED Mr J. A. Bretherton, the unsuccessful candidate for presidency, of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, offered his resignation from the executive to the first meeting of the executive committee last evening. Mr Bretherton, who was not present, wrote that he felt that the services of Mr R. J. Cornwell, the former treasurer, had been valuable, and should not be lost to the executive. Mr Cornwell was unsuccessful in the ballot for the executive.
Consideration of the letter should be deferred until the president (Mr G. D. Hattaway) and the vice-president (Mr A. Coleman) had met Mr Bretherton and discussed the matter further, said Mr D. W. Russell. “I feel that a man who offered his services as president must feel he could render very great service to this association,” he said. “I think he was very quick on the night of the annual election to express the view that he was prepared to vacate office on the executive in favour of Mr Cornwell, who had gone to the poll and been defeated by a proper vote of members. “If Mr Bretherton had been elected president. I wonder if he would have resigned.” Mr Russell’s motion that Mr Bretherton be asked to reconsider his action, “as he must have thought he could render good service,” and that he be met by the president and vicepresident, was seconded by Mr R. A. Murie and carried.
“I feel that some of us would like a few more words, but we will leave it until after the president has reported,” said Mr G. McMillan.
