QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES

Prince Cortauld Wins Easily STAKE EARNINGS NOW £43,190 (NX. Press (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 17. Prince Cortauld yesterday became the biggest stake-winner at present racing in Australia when he won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. Prince Cortauld won £5876 for his New Zealand owner, Mr M. J. Moodabe, and brought his total stake-winnings to £43,190. Until yesterday. Rising .Fast (£42,890) headed the list. Prince Cortauld overcame a slight disadvantage of joint trouble to win from Pride of Egypt by three lengths, with Carioca, six lengths away, third. Finito finished fourth. The three place-getters now have finished racing for the season. According to Carioca’s owner, Mr J. Booshand, it is "100 to 1” against CarioCa ever racing again. Prince Cortauld’s trainer, Maurice Mc- , Carten, said Prince Cortauld had developed slight joint trouble in ’the near, foreleg, which had given rise to some anxiety, although it had not caused much trouble lately. W. Cook, on Pride of Egypt, ran his race in. bursts of speed in the hope that N. Sellwood, on Prince Cortauld, would try to sprint against him. Sellwood held his posiion of second, however, and it was not until they were about a furlong and a half from home that he allowed Prince Cortauld to run up to Pride of Egypt. In a hard finish, Prince Cortauld was too strong. Cook’s judgment of pace was the main factor in the success of Sabah in the Adrian Knox Stakes. Cook quickly summed up the muddling pace set by Miss Mahal as meaning that Sabah would be set only a sprinter’s task. Cook capitalised on the slow pace to such an extent that fillies with more stamina were no match for Sabah in the straight.. Sabah won by a length and three-quar-ters from Karen, with Moy borough three lengths away, third. Principal results: — QUEEN ELIZABETH RANDWICK STAKES, Of £BOOO. Weight-for-age.
