ROAD DEATHS

“TOO MANY MAORI DRIVERS INVOLVED” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 16. A recent statement that too many Maori drivers were involved in serious and fatal accidents was supported by facts and his object was to draw attention to a serious position that could be remedied, said the Chief Traffic Superintendent of the Transport Department (Mr P. C. Watson) yesterday.

The figures for 1953 (the latest available statistics) were: Maori deaths on the road 30.6 per 100,000 of Maori population: Europeans 14.1 per 100,000. Mr Watson said that the incomplete figures for 1954 showed much the same position. Approximately the same ratio held for serious but not fatal accidents.
