SIX AFRICANS ARRESTED

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, April 16. An African sports meeting due to be held -m Benoni, 20 miles east of Johannesburg today, was cancelled after the arrest of six Africans. The arrested men were demonstrating against the South African Government’s Bantu Education Act, in a procession before the meeting. The procession, consisting mostly of young Africans, marched through the streets of Benoni, which were patrolled by police in large numbers with armed reinforcements.

The sports meeting was coupled with an annual fete for African children, and was planned to coincide with the official opening of Benoni’s new £7,000,000 native suburb. Slogans like, “We don’t want the Bantu Education Act” and “Away with Eiselen (Dr. W. W. M. Eiselen, Secretary for Native Affairs),” appeared overnight at the entrance to the sports ground.
