EGYPT’S POLICY AT BANDUNG
Anti-British Tone Forecast
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 14. The Egyptian Government will sound a strongly anti-British note at the African-Asian Conference at Bandung. ‘ The Egyptian Government is chagrined at Britain’s prompt adherence to the defence pact between Turkey and Iraq which it had fought tooth and nail, says the “Yorkshire Post.”
“It appears now that the modicum of goodwill that the British Government created by evacuating its Suez Canal bases, has evaporated only too quickly in heated arguments about the Turkey-Iraq pact. The Egyptian Premier, Colonel Nasser, and his übiquitous Minister of National Guidance, Major Salah Salem, and editor of the chief Government newspaper, “Goumhouria Anwar Sadate,” will represent Egypt at the conference. Observers believe that Colonel Nasser will seek close co-operation with India, with the aim of creating a powerful body of neutralist opinion, says the “Yorkshire Post.” ‘ Nasser’s Programme According to reports from Cairo, Colonel Nasser intends to present a seven-point programme to the conference:
A formal protest against the presence of British troops in the Middle East, and against the United Kingdom's having any bases there. A declaration giving moral support to “the struggle for independence in Kenya.” A declaration supporting the end of French rule in the North African territories of Morocco and Tunisia, and of Algeria, which is a department of Metropolitan France.
A ban on “Colonialism" in general. A demand that the South African Government abolish racial legislation. *
The forming of an Asian and African bloc against Israel A declaration endorsing India's policy of non-alignment. “A report suggests that Colonel Nasser has been careful to leave the United States out of the picture. It remains to be seen whether the Egyptian delegation will be able to maintain that circumspect attitude throughout the conference, for the Chinese delegation is expected to try to concentrate the fire of the Bandung conference at the United States,” says the “Yorkshire Post."
