Copper prices slumped in London today by more than £3O sterling ’a ton after the British Government had announced it would sell up to 45,000 tons from its stockpile. The metal, which has been one of the “precious metals” on the London Metal exchange because of world-wide shortages, sold at £304, compared with £332 sterling yesterday. Prices as high as £360 sterling a ton have been paid in the last few months on the exchange, but well-informed trade sources said this morning that the Government announcement marked the end of the era of high prices. The sale of somewhat less than half the 45,000 tons has already -been decided and this will go back mainly to the two principal suppliers to the Government stockpile. These are the Rhodesian Selection Trust and the Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa.
