N.Z. OPERA SOCIETY PROJECT

FORMATION APPROVED IN WELLINGTON

WELLINGTON, April 14. A New Zealand Opera Society, initiated in Wellington but expected to spread throughout the Dominion, is being formed to aid the New Zealand Opera Company to reach professional status.

Approval for the formation of a society was expressed by a well attended of interested citizens in Wellington. A number of £1 annual subscriptions were paid by foundation members, and the citizens attending were told the society would begin steps for incorporation later. Mr S. Campbell, a member of the originating committee, who addressed the meeting on the aims and objects of the group, said: “It looks as if we have got off to an enthusiastic start.” *Ol6 next step would be the formation of a guaranteed company, and the incorporation of the society. It was hoped the society would eventually spread throughout New Zealand and perhaps link up with the 600-strong opera society in Auckland.
