NEWS FOR WOMEN Wann Sunny Weather For Second Day At Riccarton

The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was continued at the Riccarton racecourse yesterday, when the major attraction on an interesting programme was the Great Autumn Handicap, a fine race in which beautiful horses were seen in action and were cheered to the winning post by an enthusiastic crowd. The weather was perfect—calm and balmy—with

strong sunshine, so warm that many women regretted that they had chosen to wear ftarm suits and tiny hats. Mrs Gilbert Grigg, wife of the chairman of the club’s committee, wore an anthracite suit trimmed with fancy black braid and hat to match. Mrs Derrick Gould, wife of the honorary treasurer, wore a blue and grey finely striped suit and a small grey hat. Among honoured guests were the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom (Sir Geoffry Scoones), Lady Scoones, and Miss Ann Scoones. Lady Scoones wore a black suit, white blouse, and small surf-green hat. Mrs J. H. Grigg wore a green novelty suit and green hat with narrow dawn-turned brim. With her was her sister, Mrs John Barker, who wore a pervenche blue suit, pale grey blouse and blue hat. Mrs Stewart Hunter wore a dark green suit, crossbarred with lighter green, a yellow jumper and yellow hat. Mrs Ken Austin was accompanied by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs A. Wigley, Otamarama, and from Rapa Downs, Conway Flats, had come Mrs Duncan Macfarlane and her daughter, Miss Lindsay Macfarlane. Mrs Arthur Wallis, of Greymouth, was with Mrs E. W. Reeves, who wore a grey suit with pleated skirt and smart little white hat trimmed with opalescent sequins. Another visitor was Mrs Rawei Murray, from Marlborough, who wore a pale grey blouse with her grey suit and grey felt hat Mrs Gladstone Ward wore an emerald green dress with black patent leather belt and small black hat. Mrs George Hutton wore a navy hat with a catkin yellow suit, and Mrs lan Atkinson (Hanmer Springs) wore a pale grey ensemble and wide brimmed black velour hat.

Mrs James Ensor wore a navy suit narrowly striped with white and finished with a white pique collar and her hat of black felt was closefitting. Miss Susan Cracroft Wilson wore a navy frock largely patterned in white in scattered design, white hat with downtumed brim narrowly banded with navy. Mrs Alastair Guild wore a dark marina suit with black velvet collar and cuffs and hat to match with striped black and marina upturned brim. She was accompanied by her sister, Mrs F. R. Davison, and sister-in-law, Mrs T. McKellar. Others present were Mrs George Macdonald, who was being warmly congratulated on the success of her husband’s horse, Tess, in the Nursery Handicap, Mrs T. C. Robinson, Mrs Maurice Johnston, Mrs H. W. Macfarlane, Mrs E. C. Tapley and Miss Susan Tapley, Mrs Walter Scott, Mrs R. E. Alexander, Mrs George Louisson, Mrs J. B. Hay, Mrs Gordon Coull, Mrs G. Willis, Mrs C. H. Sykes, Mrs lan Menzies, Mrs A. J. Blakely, Mrs Hanmer Atkinson and her daughter, Mrs R. C. Overton, Mrs R. Gerard, Mrs George Turrell and her daughter, Mrs J. Chaytor, Mrs D. Macbean Stewart, Mrs H. C. Greenwood, Mrs J. Connolly, Mrs R. J. McKergow, Mrs George Reid, Mrs David Gerard, Miss Joanna Cracroft Wilson, Miss Virginia Grigg, Miss Susan Grigg, Miis Noeline Nutt, recently returned from England, Miss Diana Rutherford, Miss Ann Boyle, Miss Mary Boyle and their visitors, Misses Mary Borthwick, Jocelyn Marshall, and Pamela Savage.
