SOVIET LEGATION IN CANBERRA
SALE PLANNED
CANBERRA, April 11. The Russian Legation in Canberra is to be sold by public auction soon. Diplomatic officials in Canberra believe that this means that the Russians have no intention of seeking an early resumption of diplomatic relations with Australia.
The Swedish Legation, which is handling Russian affairs in Australia, is awaiting final instructions from Moscow before fixing a date for the auction.
The Swedes have been handling Russian affairs in Australia since the Soviet Union broke off diplomatic relations last year after the defection of Vladimir Petrov and his wife last April. The Russians paid about £15,000 for the building when they set up a mission in Australia during the war, but they are reported to be seeking at least £60,600 for it now.
It is believed that private offers of up to £25,000 have been made for the building.
