THIEVES ACTIVE IN ASHBURTON

SIX OFFICES ENTERED IN ONE NIGHT TOTAL OF LESSTHAN £lO STOLEN Six business premises at Ashburton ! were entered by thieves on Sunday ' night or early yesterday morning and ’ although considerable trouble was 1 taken to break open windows and ' doors, the haul was less than £lO in r Breaking glass in the door, entry 1 was gained to the office of the vacuum Oil Company, East street. A cash box - was broken open and about £5 was I stolen. The same method was used to 1 gain access to the office of the Atlantic ■ Union Oil Company in West street. ! Nothing was missing yesterday morning. A window was broken to get into the premises of the Shall Oil Company in West street. An unlocked cash box was opened, but it did not contain money. Entry to St. James theatre in Tancred street was obtained by breaking > a window, at the rear of the building. > The door of the manager’s office was broken open and an unsuccessful • attempt was made to get at the safe ' which was bedded m concrete. More ■ than £4 in money was taken from an I, office cupboard. About eight years ago this theatre was entered and the safe • was taken from the building and was 1 left in a plantation at Wlndow. - The Ashburton Returned Services’ ■ Association club in West Street was entered through' the back of the 1 premises. The doer at the secretary's • office was forced but nothing was • missing from the premises. i Breaking glass in a door of the office • attached to the factory of Tuckers, i. Ltd., Tancred street, thieves entered the office by opening the lock. A cash r box was opened but it contained “ nothing.
