CHRISTCHURCH CLUB’S CARNIVAL

Christchurch Swimming Club held the last carnival of the season at the Addington school baths on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal. The Britt Cup was presented by Mr Baxter O’Neill to Miss C. Graham for being the most improved swimmer- this season. The McDougal Cup was presented to B. McEvitt, winner of the boys’ 25 yards freestyle. Results were;—

Lois Bailey, with 20 points, was the senior champion and Wendy Cullen (16 points) was runner-up in the annual girls’ swimming sports of the Christchurch Technical College. The junior champion was Jocelyn Beaumont (24 points), and the runners-up, each with eight points, were Evelynne lit on, Jeanette Newman, and Colleen Crawford. FIVE RECORDS BEATEN Five Canterbury swimming records were lowered in special attempts at the Centennial Pool on Saturday evening. Garry Johnson, in a special attempt on the New Zealand under 14 110 yards breaststroke, created a new record of G. McFadden, the Canterbury 110 yards intermediate backstroke record holder, lowered his record by 2.2 sec. His previous record was 80.3®ec. A good swim by D. O. McGiffen resulted in his breaking the Canterbury senior 440 yards record. He recorded smin 42.8 sec, J. Watson lowered the Canterbury intermediate 220 yards record set by Paul Garratt last year. Watson’s time for the distance was 2min 2.4 sec. Garratt's record was 2mln 2.ssec. A thrilling swim by P. Garratt over « i distance of 440 yards freestyle resulted in yet another record being broken. His time of smin 10.6 sec lowered the Cantor- > bury senior record set by him early this year. .
