RUGBY FOOTBALL
POVERTY BAY CHALLENGE FOR SHIELD (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, March 8. A special challenge for the Ranfurly Shield is to be lodged by the Poverty Bay Rugby Union with the Canterbury Rugoy Union. This will be Poverty Bay’s challenge since it travelled to Dunedin in 1948 to play Otago. If accepted, it will be Poverty Bay’s sixth challenge for the shield. SYDENHAM CLUB The annual meeting of the Sydenham Rugby Football Club was held on Monday. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr A. E. McPhail; president, Mr J. O. Hattersley; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Kerr, C. L. Hardie, C. Line, and J. Gibbs; club captain, Mr K. Petheram; deputy-club captain, Mr D. Symes; secretary, Mr K. R. McNeil; treasurer, Mr A. Brazil; delegates to Canterbury Rugby Union, Messrs J. O. Hattersley, W. Kerr, C. L. Hardie, and C. Line; auditor, Mr S. G. Faulkner; committee. Messrs L. Rollinson, J. O’Neill, N. Falloon, I. Kerr, R. Hazelhurst, R. Rose, and C. Miles. Opening day for open-grade players will be. at Hagley Park on March 26 and general opening day at Waltham Park on Saturday, April 2,
