TASMAN CUP

BIENNIAL CONTESTS SUGGESTED PROPOSAL BY N.Z.L.G.U. (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 7. Subject to the consent of the Australian Ladies* Golf Union, Tasman Cup womens international golf matches will be played every two years, instead of annually as at present. The executive committee of the New Zealand Ladies* Golf Union has reached this decision “in the interests of a wider inquiry into the merits of prospective players and because of the belief that the longer interval would facilitate a tour of the host country by the visiting team rather than a hurried visit confined to the match itself.” In reaching its decision, the executive committee also decided to invite the Canadian Ladies* Golf Union to send a team to tour New Zealand in 1957. On the suggestion of Mrs H. Wilson (South Auckland) the Ladies’ Golf Union decided that its future international teams would be chosen by a selection committee of three, rather than by the whole executive, as in the past. Each district will be asked to nominate players, together with a record of performances over the previous two years, and upon nomination players will be required to fill in a questionnaire for the selection committee. Mrs Wilson was appointed the representative of the executive on the selection committee. Mrs G. W. Hollis, of Auckland, was appointed the North Island selector, and Miss Valmai Fleming, of Canterbury, was appointed South Island selector. In the event of the island selectors not being available, Mrs S. Macrae (Wellington) will act for Mrs Hollis, and Miss L. Lucas (Nelson) for Miss Fleming. VETERANS’ CLUB The Canterbury Veterans’ Golf Club held its monthly match on the Waitikiri course. Results were:— Nine-hole Stableford. G. Templeton, 18 points; nine-hole bogey, W. G. Morrison, •1 down; 18-hole stroke, T. Quirk, 70 net.
