WOMEN’S CLUB

MEMBERS ENTERTAIN HUSBANDS

Members of the Canterbury Women’s Club entertained their husbands, sons and friends at a gathering in the club rooms last evening to mark the opening of the club’s activities for the year. Mrs N. W. Gale presided. The floral decorations, bowls of pink lilies and zinnias were the work of Mrs R. I. Brake.

The excellent musical programme was provided by Mrs Linda Haase (songs), Mrs Maisie McNair, Miss M. Chapman and Miss Romola Griffiths (instrumental trio) and Mr Peter Law (songs). The accompanists were Mrs W. E. Olds and Mrs Law. The guest speaker was Mr E. P. Sanders, who told members of his visit to Saudi Arabia. Mr Sanders went to Arabia for the United Nations’ Technical Assistance Administration to supervise the installation of tele-com-munications equipment for the government.

He said that although his stay had been an interesting experience Saudi Arabia was a country with a great amount of glamour and interest in retrospect. The many restrictions and primitive way of life made conditions f °r a European dreary and trying. Mr Sanders said that the hospitality was high and one had to be very care-’ ful not to offend. He had been an honoured guest at lavish banquets where one sat on the floor and ate pieces of meat from carcases of sheep stuffed with, rice. It was the height of hospitality for the guest to receive the eye of the beast. During the several servings of tea and coffee, the louder one sipped it the greater w a® the Bost’s delight. .3? ® women, Mr Sanders said, were still heavily veiled. They were kept in seclusion and seen only by their husbands ? nd immediate relatives. Mr Sanders said most of his leisure time had been spent in bathing in the H 1 t nd s P e aring the multicoloured fish.
