CANTERBURY WINS TITLE WOMEN’S TEAM UNBEATEN AT TOURNAMENT (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, Feb. 24. The Canterbury women’s softball team today beat both Otago and South Canterbury, and thus brought the New Zealand interprovincial women’s championship title to the South Island for the first time. Throughout the tournament, which ends tomorrow, Canterbury have proved their superiority. They won the eight matches played, several of them convincingly, with only one match to play against the weak West Coast side.

Wellington should finish the tournament with seven wins to take second place. Other placings so far are Waikato, five wins; Hutt Valley, four; Southland, Manawatu, Otago, and South Canterbury, two each; and West Coast, nil.

South v iterbury were a much Improved team against Canterbury this afternoon. Canterbury were fielding their strongest side in an endeavour to clinch the title, but they did not have everything their own way. Both pitchers, B. Lapsley (South Canterbury) and B. Makinson (Canterbury) commanded respect, and the first three innings were without score. In the fourth; innings, Canterbury scored five runs and South Canterbury could score only one in the fifth. The only serious injury of the tournament was suffered by Joyce Somerville, the Otago captain, in the last innings of the last match of the day against West Coast. She was running to take a catch when she fell over another player and received a broken collarbone. In the match, Otago was untroubled to win 20-4. The draw for the final matches tomorrow morning is: Wellington v. West Coast, Otago v. Southland, Waikato v. South Canterbury, Hutt Valley v. Manawatu, Canterbury a bye.
