SUPPORT FOR LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD PROJECT

Sir, —Mr G. Callaghan, qhairman of the Ashburton County Council, should be more explicit. When Lyttelton’s harbour project was under discussion by his council, he is reported to have said that it was most unlikely that Ashburton County would break away from the Lyttelton harbour district. It was therefore only natural to assume that the chairman’s opinion indicated that his council gave its unequivocal support to the overdue modernisation of Lyttelton’s port at a cost of £3,550,000. It now appears, however, that the council’s unequivocal support will only be given if no harbour rate is levied on the county. Does this mean that the Ashburton County Council wants something for nothing and that it would accept the benefits accruing from the harbour scheme only at someone else’s expense?— Yours, etc., PROGRESS.
