Jon Cimpu, chauffeur at the Rumanian Legation in Copenhagen, who recently defected to the West, would be kept in custody until a charge of theft against him had been heard, it was reported today. Mr Hans Hapkkerup, the Minister of Justice, said it was certain that Cimpu would be given permission to stay in Denmark, as he had requested. But he would have to remain in custody until the theft case had been tried. Cimpu left the Legation earlier this month and complained to Danish authorities that his wife was being detained in the Legation against her will. The Rumanian Charge d’Affaires alleged that the chauffeur had stolen money from the Legation.
Cimpu’i wife has since returned to Rumania.
