WOOL SALE AT INVERCARGILL

CROSSBRED REACHES NEW LEVEL

KEEN COMPETITION ON SECOND DAY

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Feb. 23. Farmers who had wool offered on the second and final day of the Invercargill double wool sale today had reason to be highly satisfied with prices. Crossbred wool reached a new level for the present seaspn, and prices generally advanced by about 21 per cent. Over-all, the sale was an excellent one, with prices up considerably on the corresponding sale last season.

The wool opened up in good condition similar to that of the first day. Competition was steady and widespread, the Continent being the chief buyer. Bradford buyers, operating on extended limits, challenged strongly, while United States and Japanese interests as well as New Zealand mills were keen to obtain wools suitable for their own requirements. About 23,000 bales were offered by.four firms, the top price of 78Jd being paid for 23 bales of super Southdown wool. Top price for farmers’ classed wool was 68d, paid for five bales of hogget wool. Repercussions from the recent strike in England have created shipping difficulties. To assist in meeting the situation in this centre, an extended prompt date has been fixed for March 25. This applies to both days of the sale.
