ROAD PLAN IN AMERICA
President’s Call To Congress (Rec. 11.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 22. President Eisenhower sent to Congress today a 10-year 101,060,000,000 dollars road building programme. The President cited four reasons for “comprehensive and quick and for-ward-looking*’ action. They were: (1) To reduce highway casualties by making roads safer. (2) To reduce the cost of vehicle operation. (3) In case of an atomic 'attack on key cities, the road network must permit quick evacuation of target areas, mobilisation of defence forces, and maintenance of every essential economic function.
(4) Ten years hence there would be 81,000,000 vehicles on the road, compared with a 1953 total of 56,279.864.
