APPOINTMENT AS CONSTABLES

Traffic Officers In Christchurch SIX SELECTED BY COUNCIL Six officers of the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council have been appointed special constables under Section 69 of the Municipal Corporations Act. They are:—Messrs Percy Lunn, Joseph Brown, Lester Francis Smith, Leo John Wilson, Harold Benjamin Barker, and Mervyn Hylton Loughlin. The section of the act reads:—“Any magistrate or any two or more justices may appoint in writing under his or their hands any officer, agent or servant of the council to be a special constable, to act for such time and within such limits within the borough as may be appointed by the council. “Every such special Constable shall be sworn in by a justice to execute the office of constable within the limits to which his appointment extends. and when so sworn in shall have, exercise and enjoy the same powers and immunities, and be liable to all such duties and responsibilities, as constables have or are subject to by law.” . The powers given the special constables will probably enable them to make arrests for offences under the Police Offences Act and also to demand information from any driver or person who had been in charge of a vehicle upon a public road.
