ADDINGTON MARKET

GOOD SALE FOR ALL STOCK Lamb And Sheep Prices Rise

IMPROVED CATTLE VALUES Both the fat lamb and fat sheep sales showed an improvement in prices at the Addington stock market yesterday. Lambs rose by 2s a head compared with last week’s good prices and for sheep the rise was 2s to 3s with, in eases, 5s to 6s more being paid than 'or comparable sheep in last week’s offering. Although the general quality of the fat cattle offering was poor, there was a short yarding and for a second week prices improved after the recent oeriod of over-supply. Prices for steers ind heifers improved up to £2 on last week’s sale. Dairy and store cattle were few and not of outstanding quality. The demand for dairy cattle was keen. Some pens n the veal section sold well. FAT LAMBS A slight delay in the arrival of two leading buyers for the beginning of the Eat lamb sale reduced competition for the opening race, but from then until the 2nd the sale was bright and generally on i par with last week’s excellent market. Heavy-weight butchers’ lambs rose in price by up to 2s a head, but others held firm to last week’s prices. Altogether 2475 lambs were offered, compared with 1476 last week. It was a good sound sale, with the lighter lambs under greater competition and with a better representation of buyers than last week. Good quality shorn lambs again sold very well. The Ohoka Homestead sold 44 at 66s Id to 74s Id, and Davaar, Ltd., sold nine at 70s Id to 76s Id. Top price of the sale was 96s Id, paid for nine lambs from J. A. Rothery (Rotumanu). Wright (Little River), sold 11 at 94s Id. Best lambs sold at 81s Id to 96s Id, good 77s Id to 80s Id, medium 67s 7d to 75s 7d, and others down to 56s Id. Sales included:—

For all this class tne market firmed and was from 2s to 3s better at the beginning of the sale As the sale progressed this rise was maintained and, in cases, rose to 5s to 6s a head better than the prices for comparable sheep last week. There was a smaller entry of ewes. At the opening of the sale not much change in value was seen over last week’s rates, but as buyers ( gathered and the sale progressed the market generally was well in advance of export rates. Butchers took almost all the yarding. Prices for the best ewes were from par to 3s to 4s a head better than last week and all classes sold at very firm rates. Wittie (Teddington). 1 cow at £25 2s 6d; J. T. Lilly (Rakaia), 1 cow at £34 17s 6d. Owing to a smaller entry in the dairy section—about 40 head—demand was much brighter than last week, when sales were hard to make. The market for heifers improved £2 10s to £3 and more for better quality beasts. There were odd sales to £4l. Cow prices were also slightly better. One extra good Friesian brought £39. Values were:— Best heifers. £3O to £3B 10s. Medium, £2i to £29. Small and inferior, down to £l4. Gord second, third, and fourth calvers, £24 to £33. Medium, £lB to £22. Inferior, down to £9. STORE CATTLE In the store cattle section there was a very small yarding of rather inferior stock, made up of cull dairy cows, nondescript heifers and steers with little breeding. There were no quotable sales. VEAL The medium yarding in the veal section consisted mostly of runners. There were a few good suckers, for which there was good competition. .One pen of 12 made £l3 15s 6d to £2O Ils. Two were bought at the top price. The rest of the sale was on a par with last week. General quality was fair. Values were:— Large runners, extra good, to £26 Is; good, £l7 10s to £l9 10s; medium, £l3 10s to £l6 10s; unfinished, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; good suckers. £l4 10s to £l5 15s; medium, £8 10s to £11; light and unfinished, 50s to £5 FAT PIGS There was a much larger yarding in the porker section, which included four trucks from outside districts. Competition was again keen for best quality light and medium-weight porkers, but heavier weights brought little more than the lighter weight pigs. . Choppers again came forward in large numbers, but the market remained firm on last week’s levels. In the bacon section the entry was the largest for several weeks. All good quality pigs met excellent competition, but the over-weight and over-fat types were practically unsaleable. Values were:— Light porkers, £4 14s 6d to £5 14s 6d. Medium, £5 17s 6d to £6 12s 6d. Heavy-weight, £6 9s 6d to £7 Is 6d. Choppers, £8 Is to £l4 8s §d. Light baconers. £7 19s 6d to £8 9s 6d. Medium, £8 12s 6d to £9 0s fid. Heavy-weight, £9 4s 6d to £lO Is fid. Over-fat types, £6 14s 6d to £8 Os 6d. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was again small and consisted mainly of weaners. The attendance of buyers was a little larger, and competition was keener all round, with an advance of 4s to 5s a head. Values were:— Small weaners, 23s to 275. Best weaners, 30s to 40s. SVps. 42s to 50s. Small and medium stores, 60s to 755. Large stores, 78s to 965.
