A RUINED LIFE

Sir,—ln the report of a certain sentence, following a trial, senior counsel stated that “the prisoner’s young life is irretrievably ruined.” In a country professing Christianity, where there is, or should be, an emphasis on reformative detention, I feel that a cruel statement to make. If we believe in the power of Christ to transform the most sinful life, surely we can know that this power is available to rebuild any life and make of it something beautiful.—Yours, etc., E. S. HAYMAN. February 22, 1955.
