STOATS AND THE NOTORNIS
Sir,— Recently there have been reports of the menace of stoats to Fiordland bird life, but seldom is there any reference to any steps to control these nests. Socn after the notornis was rediscovered, the Wildlife Department trapped stoats in Notornis valley. This is a more positive action than attempting to rear the notornis away from its natural habitat. Probably the Wildlife Department has done research on stoat control, as some time ago a trap which was harmless to bird life was used on the Milford Track. Eradication of stoats is now obviously impossible. but efforts should be made by Wildlife Department officers and rangers to keep down the numbers of stoats, so that some, at least, of our native birds will survive in our national parks, if nowhere else.— Yours, etc., ACTION, NOT APATHY February 22, 1955.
