CHRISTCHURCH-PICTON HIGHWAY

Only 27J miles of the ChristchurchPicton State highway remain unsealed. The target of 25 miles set by the Ministry of Works to be sealed during the current season has been reached. Contractors are at present working around the Conway Bluffs, and the Ministry of Works has commenced operations on the Hundalee-Oaro section.

Widening of the road and the mixing of the base course has been started between Hundalee and Limestone creek. This is a winding hilly section, and it will be necessary to hold mounds of material on the side of the road while the base course is being mixed. The department issues the warning’that motor traffic using this section of road over the next month will require to exercise caution. Beyond The Shades, north of Kaikoura, a further three miles of road is being widened and metalled in preparation for sealing.
