MAJOR ROAD SYSTEM

RIGHT OF WAY OVER CROSS TRAFFIC SUPPORT BY AUCKLAND SAFETY COUNCIL “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, February 22. The “major road” system of traffic control has been approved by tne Auckland Metropolitan Road Safety Council. x x i If the proposals are put into law, vehicles on major roads will have the right of way over all cross traffic irrespective of the right-hand rule. The New Zealand council recommends that a large yellow triangle with a black border bearing beneath it the words “Major Road AheadGive Way” be erected on every road near its junction with a major road. At intervals along the length of the major road should be a shield-shaped sign bearing the words “Major Road,” and a figure to indicate the route number of the road. At the end of the road will be a large sign, “Major Road Ceases.” The first major roads, recommends the New Zealand council, should be between Wellington and Petone and between Ngauranga and Wanganui. Both the triangle and “Major Road Ceases” signs should be in reflecting materials. „ The cost of marking the 412-mile main highway between Auckland and Wellington (through Hamilton, Taupo and Bulls) would be £3lOO, says the report. Along the route are 466 “T” intersections and 77 crosroads. During 1953 the number of collisions between cross traffic along the whole length was 10. The 577 miles between Picton and Bluff would cost £5790. “This is a great step forward,” commented Mr J. H. Luxford, the Mayor of Auckland and chairman of the Auckland council. “It will be commended by all interested in traffic control. '
