PRIZES TO BE BIGGER TOTAL TO RISE BY £3OOO (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 22. | Prize-money for the New Zealand art union is to be increased from ? £7OOO to £lO,OOO from March 14. The r * first prize will be £5OOO, instead of • £3OOO. The Minister of Internal j Affairs (Mr S. W. Smith) announced J this today. « Tickets will still cost only 2s 6d, and J the organisation will function without j any increase “either in the remuner- ( ation of the licensee or in the costs I of administration,” said Mr Smith. j The first art union for the increased 1 prizes will be the “Bigger than Ever” 4 art union, for which tickets will be a available on March 14. It will be j drawn on April 27. 1 The Minister said that very strong 1 competition from overseas lotteries j operating in New Zealand was being 1 experienced, and the Government felt J (hat to protect and maintain the pres3«ent grants to various charitable and qphilathropic organisations it was necesil i tary to agree to the increase. 3 The art unions had become a recog;aised institution in New Zealand, and fc like profits had proved of inestimable <ralue in assisting deserving organis- • rttions to carry out their worth-while J ’vorks. ° “The Government felt that it would (i great pity,” said Mr Smith, “if this iissistance to the organisations had to | pe reduced, and consequently it has ■ (aken this step to avoid such a posj I ability.”
