EXPLOSION IN U.S. SUBMARINE

Six Men Killed (Rec. 10 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 21. Deadly hydrogen gas was pumped from the hull of the submarine Pomodon today, but the fumes prevented rescue workers from recovering the bodies of two of the six men killed in a series of three explosions aboard. The bodies of three sailors and one rescue worker were brought out. The two missing bodies were those of members of the crew. Four crewmen were injured seriously and the Pomodon’s executive officer was injured critically. Lieutenant - Commander Charles Almy, who is directing rescue operations. said the explosions were presumed to have been caused by excessive hydrogen, which came from storage batteries when they were charging. It was also presumed that the high hydrogen content was caused by some malfunctioning of the battery ventilation system. The tragedy occurred as the Pomodon was preparing to go to sea after an overhaul.
