CONFERENCE OF ENGINEERS
OPENING AT CANTERBURY COLLEGE
Problems associated with development in New Zealand formed the subject of deliberations, said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), when he opened the anhual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers at Canterbury University College. Almost 300 engineers are attending the five-day conference. In New Zealand at present, development was placing severe demands on the central government and local bodies, said Mr Macfarlane. In Christchurch with the spread of home building there was a drainage problem: the transformation in ptiblic transport had brought immediate problems of new reading schemes. The magnitude of the schemes showed the skill and ability of New Zealand engineers and he recognised the importance of the part the profession had played in the past, as it must in the future. Engineers had done a wonderful job for local bodies, said Mr Macfarlane. Members of the institution’s council for 1955, as elected recently, were announced as follows: President, Mr F. M. H. Hanson (Wellington); vice-presidents, Messrs D. S. G. Marchbanks (Wellington) and J. C. Forsyth (Christchurch); members of council, Messrs E. F. Hamilton, G. R. Milne (Wellington), N. M. MacElwee, E. F. Scott {Christchurch), L. F. Withers, H. R. Bach, A. F. Downer, P. L. Laing, W. G. Morrison,. E. R. McKillop (Wellington); honorary treasurer, Mr C. S. Plank (Wellington); honorary secretary, Mr V. A. Murphy (Wellington); ex officio members, past president, Mr R. S. Maunder (Wellington); chairmen of branches. Messrs J. R. Sutton (Auckland, B. W. Spooner (Wellington), J. A. Cashin (Christchurch), W. C. Duffill (Otago).
