PRIVATE BUYING OF MEAT
“ VERY BENEFICIAL TO BRITAIN ”
LONDON, February 21. Mr Derek Heathcoat-Amory, Minister of Food, said today that he believed the return of meat buying from the Government to private hands was likely in the long run to prove very beneficial to Britain.
It would “provide meat of better quality and value than under Government buying,” he told the House of Commons.
Mr William Wells (Labour) had asked what arrangements were being made for the import of meat from the Argentine during the coming year. Mr Heathcoat-Amory replied: “Beef and pork will continue to be shipped on Government account until the bulk purchase quantities are completed. Thereafter all meat will be imported on private licence.”
