M.C.C. OUT FOR 172
Same Score As N.S.W.
(Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY. February 20. The M.C.C. made exactly the same first innings total as New South Wales when it was all out for 172 on the second day of the match at Sydney yesterday. In its second innings New South Wales had lost one wicket for 18 at stumps. No-one expected the M.C.C. to collapse like New South Wales, but it had lost half of its wickets for 35 before the bowlers received their first check.
Simpson sparred too much at Davidson’s left-arm swing bowling. Graveney played splendidly for two hours. He showed a proper sense of concentration and made some beautiful strokes, notably foot and forcing hits to the onside.
Hutton batted seventh and stood in the breach at the vital time. His defensive ability was again shown and he played some attractive cover drives, although brilliant fielding constantly rendered these strokes profitless. Evans, for the second successive innings, made his top score in firstclass matches. New South Wales fielded magnificently although Simpson dropped an easy slipcatch before Bedser scored and when the M.C.C. was 10 behind. Although Davidson was the best and most effective bowler, the 21-year-old Crawford again gave the impression of being Australia’s best young fast bowler. Scores:—
Fall of wickets: one for 0, two for 4. three for 10, four for 13, five for 35, six for 94, seven for 135, eight for 153, nine for 157.
