ASIAN DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS
NO AGREEMENT ON SITE (Special Correspondent N.ZJP.A.) LONDON. February 15. The exchange of views which has been taking place in preparation for the S.E.A.T.O. conference at Bangkok has not yet led to any agreement on where the headquarters of the permanent organisation should be, says the “Yorkshire Post.” “Britain made no secret of her preference for Singapore, which is in the heart of South-east Asia and where there is already the nucleus of a military organisation. Australia and New Zealand support the British view. But the United States is pressing for either Bangkok or Manila. Washington’s main objection to Singapore is that it is part of British territory and a colonial area. “In the eyes of the United States, the advantage of Bangkok, capital of Siam, or Manila, capital of the Philippines, is that both countries are independent and therefore are not ‘tainted with colonialism.’ ”
