Mendes-France May Be Defeated

(Rec. 12.20 a.m.) PARIS, Feb. 4. Shortly after midnight Mr MendesFrance, who has become a world figure within a few months, may cease to be Prime Minister of France. The debate on the Government’s policy for the pacification and reform of North Africa ended last night with a speech by the Prime Minister, which did not appear to elicit any enthusiasm.

Mr Mendes-France replied without anger or passion to criticism, in which Deputies were accusing him of “high treason” and “liquidating the French Empire.” Only two months ago they had voted for just those policies.
