N.Z. CHEESE IN BRITAIN

PRICES OF OLD STOCKS CUT

ACTION BY MINISTRY OF FOOD (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 4. The chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission (Mr W. Marshall) announced today that the British Ministry of Food has cut the prices of New Zealand cheese which arrived in Britain before July last year. • He said that ex store prices for the Ministry’s stocks of finest and first grade New Zealand cheese were now as follows: — For arrivals in the United Kingdom up to May 31, 1954: 140 s per cwt. For arrivals in June and July, 1954: 147 s 6d per cwt. For arrivals after July, 1954: Price unchanged at 160 s per cwt. “The drop in prices of 20s per cwt and 12s 6d per cwt respectively is obviously an effort by the Ministry of Food to unload its oldest stocks. While the offering by the Ministry at these low prices must affect our current sales of new season’s cheese in the United Kingdom, it is in the interests of the marketing of New Zealand cheese that these stocks of old cheese should be disposed of as speedily as possible,’’ said Mr Marshall. The cheese the Ministry of Food has in store is that which it bought under the bulk purchase agreement and has not yet been able to sell. The Ministry’s ex store price directly influences the price which current shipments from New Zealand bring on the open market.
