INDECENT ASSAULT CHARGES

MAN FOUND NOT GUILTY A jury in the Supreme Court yesterday found Albert Edward Thackeray, aged 53, a ship’s steward, not guilty on all four charges of indecently assaulting boys at Lyttelton. Mr Justice Adams discharged Thackeray. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr A. W. Brown) appeared for the Crown, and Mr G. S. Brockett for Thackeray, who pleaded not guilty to the charges. The jury returned their verdicts after a retirement of two hours. They added the following rider: “This jury recommends that stricter control should be exercised with regard to children visiting ships.” His Honour said he would ask the Crown Prosecutor to transmit the rider to the Superintendent of Police for this district with the request that the Superintendent inform the shipping company concerned. He did not know whether anything practicable could be done, but he felt sure that both the Superintendent of Police and the shipping company would be glad to consider the recommendation and give what effect they could to it.
