WAGE RISE FOR RAILWAYMEN

DRIVERS REJECT OFFER

LONDON, January 19. Union leaders representing 80,000 British railway footplate workers today rejected the new pay offers because they do not maintain the existing gap between the wages of the lowest-paid railwaymen and the trainarivmg “aristocracy.” The wage increases ranged from 7s to 10s a week, and would be backdated to January 10. The union chiefs, members of the executive of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen, said they had sent a written rejection of the offer to the British Transport Commission, which operates Britain’s State-owned railways. The rises offered meant increases of 6s a week for engine cleaners, between 5s 6d and 6s 6d for firemen, and 2s 6d for engine drivers. Yesterday they were accepted by another union, the National Union of Railwaymen, on the condition that the drivers’ union also gave its approval.
