MAGNETIC SURVEY IN APIA

CHRISTCHURCH OFFICERS ON EXCHANGE

An officer of the Christchurch Magnetic Survey, Mr A. L. Burrows, has left for Samoa to take charge of the Apia Observatory for two years, and Mr P. J. Gill, who has been observer in charge at Apia Observatory for the last two years has returned to Christchurch. The Christchurch Magnetic Survey controls the magnetic work at Apia, as well as operating the magnetic observatory at Amberley and conducting magnetic survey work throughout New Zealand, the outlying islands and the island dependencies.

Mr Burrows has taken with him three quartz horizontal magnetometers to relate Apia magnetic values to Amberley magnetic values, which have been correlated to the international magnetic standard. They will be returned to Christchurch for deducing final results. A new magnetometer for measuring vertical magnetic intensity was sent to the Apia Observatory. New continuous magnetic recorders will also be installed at Apia before the beginning of the International Geophysical Year.
