MIGRANTS FROM BRITAIN

Captain Cook To Bring 1072

LAST VOYAGE FOR SIX MONTHS

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, January 20. Wheq the Captain Cook sails from Glasgow on January 25 with 1072 immigrants on board, she will be making her last voyage to the Dominion for six months. On returning to Britain the ship will be leased, presumably temporarily, by the New Zealand Government for tourist traffic to Canada. During this period, immigrants will travel in liners of New Zealand shipping companies, which have increased their allocation of berths to the Government. A total of 5500 immigrants is expected to go to the Dominion this year, compared with 5200 last year, the increase being chiefly accounted for by' the larger number of married people now being accepted under the Government scheme. Since migration began after the war, there has always been at least one ship chartered by the Government to accommodate migrants. There was first the Atlantis, which was ultimately scrapped, the Captain Hobson and the Captain Cook. The Captain Hobson was released temporarily by the New Zealand Government to the British War Office. The New Zealand Government has spent more than £1,500,000 in renovating and equipping the Captain Hobson and the Captain Cook for immigrant traffic.
