ITALIAN SHIP AT TIMARU
MEMORIAL SERVICE TO BE HELD ON BOARD (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, January 12. The ship of tragic memory to the few New Zealand prisoner of war survivors of her sinking in 1942 is due to berth in Timaru about 6 a.m. tomorrow. Carrying 3000 Anzac prisoners of war from North Africa to Italy, the Italian freighter Nino Bixio was torpedoed and sunk by British submarines off the Greek coast. Of the 300 prisoners of war saved, 118 were New Zealanders.
The Nino Bixio will be in Timaru for nearly two days, and Mr P. L. Marquand, Timaru manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, agents for the vessel, is arranging with the master, Captain E. Sambolino, for
a short memorial service to be held aboard.
Mr G. A. Harrison, the Mayor of Temuka, a member of the Dominion executive of the Returned Services’ Association, and South Island district vice-president, will lay a wreath on behalf of the executive. Members of the Timaru Returned Services* Association will also attend.
Mr A. Harper, secretary of the Timaru Ex-Prisoners of War Association, said today that any member of his association could attend the ceremony, and it was expected that many would do so.
