TOMATOES

Sir, —I sincerely thank the other writers of letters for their support of my submissions. It is only fair, however, to point out that the auctioneers charge 10 per cent, commission and not higher, as has been stated, the auctioneers being compensated by the higher prices obtained. The other writers speak truly as to the overhead charges. The real question at issue is, as I wrote, the undue percentage of profit. The grower has to rely upon the services of the auctioneer and retailer, and both are entitled to a fair return; but the retailer, who is able to regulate his buying, and so prevent waste at a time of glut, is free of the anxiety of the grower, whose crops mature within a short compass of time. The retailer should be stopped from making undue profit. In this he would be recompensed by a greater turnover, to the advantage of the consumer.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. December 14, 1954.
