Biographical Notes On New Members Of House

On the preliminary count there are 20 new members oi Parliament—nine from the National and •‘A*?™ the Labour Party.- The following are brief biographical notes on the candidates elected. Mr P O. Skoglund (L.) Palmerston North Mr Skoglund, who is a qualified solicitor, is a master at the Palmerston North iiigh School, and has lived in Palmerston North for 32-years. He has been keenly interested m sporting organisations, was* treasurer of the athletics sub-centre, a member of the cricket association and vice-president of the Manawatu Rugby Union. He is well known as a bowler, and has been president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre for five years, and represented the North Island on the New Zealand council. council. Mr J. H. George (N.) Central Otago Mr George is 53, and a fruitgrower at Roxburgh. He was educated at Otago Boys’ High School. Mr George is a vice-president of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, .chairman of the Roxburgh East Irrigation League, and chairman of the reviot Power Board. Mr R. Boord (L.) Rotorua Mr Boord, who is 45, was born in Rotorua. He was farming before the Second World War. In 1940 he left New Zealand as a private and returned as commanding officer of the 24th Battalion with the rank of lieutenantcolonel. Mr Boord stood against Mr W. Sullivan for the Bay of Plenty seat in 1946. In 1947 he was appointed assistant national secretary of the Labour Party and is also research officer. Mr A. J. Davey (N.) Walmate Mr Davey, who is 66, has spent the whole of his life farming in South Canterbury. He is chairman of the Geraldine County Council, deputychairman of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, and an active member of Federated Farmers. He has just completed 3 history of the Geraldine county. Mr Davey is married, with five children. Mr T. M. McGuigan (L.) Lyttelton Mr McGuigan is a 33-year-old accountant, who lives in Woolston. During the war he was commissioned in the Royal Navy. Mr McGuigan has been an executive member of the Woolston branch of the Labour Party and a delegate to the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee. He has been on the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association for many years and has been secretary since last year. > Mr R. E. Jack (N.) Patea Mr Jack, is a Wanganui solicitor, aged 40. For the last seven years Mr Jack has been deputy-mayor of Wanganui, and is president of the Wanganui Citizens’ Association. He served in the R.N.Z.A.F. in the Second World War. Mr R. A. Keeling (L.) Gisborne Mr Keeling represented Gisborne in Parliament irom 1949 to 1951. He is 50 years old. Before going into Parliament he was a child welfare officer for nine years. Since his defeat he has been an organiser for the Labour Party. Mr A. E. Kinsella (N.) Hauraki Mr Kinsella is 36 years old, and a schoolmaster on the staff of Paeroa District High School. Before the war he took his M.A. degree at Auckland University College, and during the war served in Greece and the Middle East before being invalided home. He was a farm worker before he took up schoolteaching. Mr W. A. Fox (L.) Miramar Mr W. A. Fox has been a trade union worker for many years, and is vicepresident of the Federation of Labour. He has been connected with .the maritime Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union for many years, serving as its '. general secretary. He has been chairman of the board of governors of Wellington Technical College,

Mr D. N. McKay (N.) Marsden Mr McKay is 45 and is a dairy ft,, mer at Waipu. He is a descendant of the pioneer settlers who took up land near Waipu after migrating from Nova Scotia. He was head prefect at Whan, garei Boys’ High School, and went tn Auckland University College. m worked in Auckland as an account, ant for some years before returning tn farming. . Mr N. J. King (L.) WaitenuUa Mr King, who is 39, has held several executive positions in the Laton, movement, including presidency of the Orakei branch of the party and vice, president of the New Zealand Fedetated Storemen and Packers' Union. He is a storeman in a chocolate factory Mr King contested the Hobson seat for Labour in 1951. Mr J. M. Deas (L.) Otahuhu

Mr Deas is a journalist and pubUsher. He was Mayor of Otahuta until his resignation a few month; ago. He was chairman of the Otahuhu School Committee for sone years and a member of the first ooramittee of the Otahuhu College. Mr T. T. Murray (N.) Stratford Mr Murray was born in Scotland 64 years ago, but has lived in New Zealand for many years. In World War I he won the Military Medal and a Military Cross and in the last World War rose to the rank of lieutenantcolonel. He farms near Stratford. H« has been a member of the Taranaki Education Board for 10 year? and chairman for six, and has served on the Stratford- County Council and the Stratford Technical High School Board. Mr W. J. Scott (N.) Rodney Mr Scott is a dairy farmer pt Hobsonville. Aged 38, he was educated at Mount Albert Grammar Schooland has been farming ever since he left school. He has been connected with the National Party for 17 yean, latterly as chairman of the Rodney electorate organisation. Mr D. C. Seath fN.) Waitomo Mr Seath is a public accountant at Taumarunui, where he was returned unopposed, as mayor at the last municipal election. He was born in Scotland 40 years ago, but has spent most of Jtis life in New Zealand. During the war he served with the Navy. Mr P. N. Holloway <l..t Heretasnga Mr Holloway is aged 37 and a manufacturers’ representative in Wellington. He served in the Army in the Second World War and was commissioned in Italy. He contested Manawatu in 1946 and in 1951 stood for Otaki and polled more than 8000 votes. Mr F. J. Kitts (L), Wellington Central Mr Kitts is a civil servant and in his early 40’s. He has been a member of the WeUington City Council, the hospital board and the harbour board since 1950 and in 1953 he topped the poll for all three bodies. Mr N. L. Shelton (N.) Ranritikel Mr Shelton was born in Taihape in 1905, and after leaving Feilding Technical School joined Hodder and Tolley, Ltd., and is now branch manager in Marton. He served with the Army overseas in the last war. . Mr E. J. Keating (L.) Hastings Mr Keating is in his early 40's. He is a Master of Arts and works in the office of the Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department. He is a member of the national executive of the .Post and Telegraph Association and its senior vice-president He is married, and has three children. Mr J. G. Edwards (L) Napier ; Mr Edwards js an employee of the Justice Department in Napier. He if aged 27 and a Master of Arts.
