LABOUR VISIT TO CHINA

Lord Lindsay of Birker said in Sydney yesterday that the Chinese Communists had put out a certain amount of window-dressing for the Attlee delegation to China, for which he was interpreter. “I could check up a good deal, because I have friends and relatives in Peking and Shanghai,” said Lord Lindsay, whose Chinese wife accompanied him. ■Lord Lindsay, senior Fellow of the Department of International Relations at the Australian National University, returned by air yesterday from visiting other parts of Asia after his China tour. ‘The British delegation did not see the countryside at all. They were shown only two villages, and these, obviously, were not typical,” he said. “One village was obviously a showplace, and the officials were keen to point out that they had three tractors to every 300 acres. This, of course, is not general in the rest of the countryside. “The other village was more a suburb of Peking, where we were informed there is one schoolteacher to every 28 children. This, too, obviously, is not typical.” Lord Lindsay continued: “The Chinese Communsts are doing a very good job in every field where the' Marxist theory does not interfere with their common sense. But they are making a mess of their foreign policy.”
