NEXT MODERATOR ELECTED DR. JOHN A. ALLAN, OF DUNEDIN (New Zealand Press Association) •W ELLINGTON, November 7. The Rev. Dr. John A. Allan was unanimously elected as Moderatordesignate by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand yesterday. In 1947, Dr. Allan was called to the principalship of the Theological Hall, Dunedin. He represented the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the world church conference at Lund, Sweden, in 1952.
Dr. Allan has an international reputation as a New Testament scholar, and is the author of several books. He has taken a full share in the wider work of the church and the community. He has been a member and convener of several important assembly committees. As convener of a special committee on marriage and divorce, he guided the formulation of the church’s attitude to the marriage of divorced persons. He has also been chaplain to the Paparua Prison, and a representative on the Bible-in-Schools League. He will take office as Moderator at the next General Assembly, which will meet in First Church, Dunedin, on November 8, 1955. During that assembly, it is planned to hold the official opening of the new Theological Hall block at Knox College.
