RACING RISING FAST WINS AGAIN

£5OOO FISHER PLATE EFFORTLESS VICTORY AT SURPRISING ODDS (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE,. Nov. .7. The New Zealand champion, Rising uasu capped his amazing Melbourne spring campaign with an effortless win in the £5OOO C. B. Fisher Plate at Flemington today. , • *- It was probably the champions easiest victory of his seven successive wins against Australia’s best, both in weight for-age and handicap races. The - most surprising part of the two cups winner’s success was the ndiculpufe price that Melbourne bookmakers offered. He started at 5 to 4 on, and at one stage of the betting he touched eveh money for a few seconds. Probably the reason for the liberal odds offered was the terrific run on the brilliant three-year-old, Pride of Egypt. Pride of Egypt, which holds the Australian record for 10 furlongs, had won the Victoria Derby at his previous start. Bets of £4OOO to £lOOO about Pride of Egypt were common. , ~ Pride of Egypt started at 7 to 2, after his price had been reduced to as low as 3 to 1. . . Cromis, which missed the cups and had come into the Fisher Plate fresh, was also strongly fancied, and started at 7 to 2, after many shrewd punters had backed him to beat the New Zealand wonder. , „ Freshest Horse In Race Rising Fast, however, again showed ms amazing recuperative powers, . a £d des P lt ® the gruelling programme which he had just come through, he still looked the freshest horse in the race. His condition was a tribute to the skin of his trainer, Ivan Tuckar. Tucker was strongly criticised by Australian would-be experts for standing the new glamour horse up to such strenuous racing. However, Rising Fast answered the critics by leaving the mounting yard after the win looking as though he could win another Melbourne Cup tomorrow.Australians are almost fanatical in their loyalty to their own horses. It takes a lot for them to concede that any horse is better than Peter Pan, Comic Court, or Hydrogen. But they now concede tms privilege to Rising Fast. Many are now saying he is the equal of Phar Lap.

Pressmen Barred Stewards at the meeting adopted the unusual practice of barring pressmen from interviewing Billy Cook, rider of Rising Fast, after the race. Stewards seldom oar pressmen from seeing jockeys a^ cr ..® major race, but the chairman of the stewards, Mr E. S. A. Bell, did not consider the event sufficiently fx> warrant such action. Pressmen are incensed and are calling for the committee of the Victorian Racing Club to take action in the matter. However, it would go without saying that Cook must have been impressed with Rising Fast’s galloping ability. • Cook, who has ridden in England ana is one of Australia’s best riders, probably suited Rising Fast better than any of the other four riders who rode nim in Melbourne. Cook is a stylist, who rides with a long rein, and is not particularly keen in the use of the whip. In fact, he never drew the whip at any stage, and Rising Fast raced niore truly than he had done under Purtell or Williamson or Ward. He never attempted to hang in at any stage. It has always been suggested here that Rising Fast regents the whip, and his generous galloping today under Cook s hands-and-heels riding supports this theory. The Running The race was without incident. Pride of Egypt went to the front, as is usual. A mile from home, Camer, on Pride of Egypt, heeled his mount away for a sixlength lead, obviously with the idea of setting up a long lead and later giving the colt a breather. However, Cook was too old in the head to fall for that, and he allowed Rising Fast more rein: and like a high-powered car he accelerated quickly to reduce the lead. Six furlongs from home, there was a gasp from the crowd when Darby <Munro, the master tactician in weight-for-age races, dashed Aidershot from last to try to wrest the lead from Pride of Egypt For a furlong the pace was sizzling, but Aidershot could not do what Munro had intended, arid the initiative was again earner’s, on Pride of Egypt. Whilst the accelerating and braking were on. Rising Fast was travelling kindly for Cook, and five furlongs from home it was apparent that the N.ew Zealand horse was going to win. Into the straight Pride of Egypt led, and once or twice Cook had to ease Rising Fast as he stepped close to Pride of Egypt’s heels. Rising Fast had raced up to Pride of Egypt two furlongs from home, and Cook gradually applied pressure, and, rather than race past Pride of Egypt, Cook simply let the big horse worry Pride of Egypt out of the race. He won by two and a half lengths, with the unlucky Cromis a further length and a quarter away, third. His time of 2min 323/ 4 sec was good, considering the overnight rain. The last half mile of the mile and a half occupied 48sec, the last five furlongs Imin IJsec. Had he been pushed out he could have clipped seconds off this time. Results:— BATMAN STAKES, Of £l5OO.
