THE WEEK

FINE SHOW OF LAMBS

Few shows these days are well patronised ip theJ fat lamb, sections, but the Amberley show is a notable exception. For some years new members of the Amberley association have taken a special interest in the fat lamb classes, and the result is a display which is probably not equalled anywhere in the South Island. The district is an early one, and lambs are well forward by show time, at the end of October. Last Saturday about 230 lambs were entered, almost all of them Down cross. About 190 of them were entered in the killing classes, and were slaughtered at Borthwick’s works at Belfast. E. J. Whyte (Waipara) had a field day and won every class except one. m which he was second. He won both the on hooks classes. ’ His top lamb was declared by the Government grader to be a model. CANTERBURY SUCCESSES Canterbury breeders had a very successful day in the Merino section of the Marlborough show, now probably the premier Merino show of the country, .last week. The estate of N. Rutherford’s Mendip Hills stud took the ewe and ram championships in both the fine and strong combing sections, and the ewe championship in the medium combing section. The medium combing ewe was grand champion. Mendip Hills also won the open fine combing ewe class, and was second in the four-tooth strong combing ewe class. Miss L. B. Wills took bom ram and ewe reserve championships in the fine combing classes, and in that section was placed first and second in the four-tooth ram, ram hogget, and ewe hogget classes. Mrs M. S. Le Cren showed the reserve champion medium combing ram, won the four-tooth ram class, and was first and second in the ram and ewe hogget classes in the medium combing section. In the strong combing section, V. Le Cren won the open ram class, took first and third in the ram hoggets, third in the four-tooth ewe. and second in the ewe hogget classes.
