WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
The Peaks. —Mrs L. Hassall presided over a large attendance at the October meeting of The Peaks Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Duckmanton reported on the half-yearly meeting held at Hawarden. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs L. Hassall in her recent bereavement. The members of the Medbury Institute were guests for the annual bring and buy, when a substantial amount was raised. Competition results:—large bloom: Mrs Rogers 1 and 2, Mrs Costello 3. Small bloom: Mrs Rogers 1, Mrs A. Hassall 2, Mrs J. P. O’Carroll 3. Spike: Mrs Rogers 1. Mrs Costello and Mrs Rogers (equal! 2. Cluster: Mrs J. P. O’Carroll 1. Mrs Power 2. Mrs Rogers 3. Posy bowl: Mrs A. Hassall 1 and 3, Mrs Roberts 2. Plain iced three-minute sponge: Mrs Duckmanton 1. Mrs A. Hassall 2 and 3. Collection of spring flowers in 21b jam jar: Mrs Costello 1. Mrs P. J. O’Carroll 2. Sefton-Kowai.—At the September meeting of the Sefton-Kowai Country Women’s Institute, presided over by Mrs Mitchell, an instructive demonstration on floral art was given by Mrs Fleming, of the Cust,West Eyre ton Women's Division of Federated Farmers. Points for show work were explained. Arrangements for the SeftonKowai Institute’s twenty-second birthday were made. The sponsorship of the institute's English child was discussed. At the spring flower sfiow held the following week the Haigh Cup for decorative work was won by Mrs F. Bryant, the Payne rosebowl for cookery by Mrs Ritchie and Mrs C. D. Petrie, the McGovern Cup for lB section by Alison Keenan, and the Eldridge Cup for most points in the show by Mrs C. D. Petrie. Mairehan.—Mrs Baker welcomed representatives from the Canterbury Federation executive, voluntary organisers, institutes in the Christchurch group the Women’s Division Federated Farmers and all other local organisations, to the nineteenth birthday of the Mairehau Country Women's Institute. Sprays were presented to all the representatives. After the cake cutting ceremony and afternoon tea, the members entertained the visitors with a programme entitled Widdlcombe Fair arranged and written by Mrs J. R. Walter.
