KING’S FAIR OUT OF

STEWARDS’

3 h JL-I iUia v t^i ng s Fair was scratched for the Stewards’ HandiJ? p «f?7 lay l 1 bu l, there are unlikely to be any notable absentees from SMMRteSrtoJtotoy. eiU “ d CnP Whe " °* e P “ yme “‘ °* £2 ° fa taGoldS*^X“hS9-6 y »sSr. ... Golden Tan will have a big following for his attempt to eouai Nightmarchs weight-earrying feat, and his chance of finishing in one Bay b t right ' H * S master the day may be the Hawke’s The search by the Hastings owners, Mr and Mrs M. Dentice, for a New Zealand Cup winner may have ended the day they bought Dormant at auction at Hastings for 350gns. In this consistent and versatile five-year-old gelding they have a strong candidate for the £5lOO twomile race today.

This is the first two-mile race of the season, and it imposes a test that brings only the genuine stayers into the picture down the long Riccarton straight. Dormant, like most of the others, has yet to race over two miles, but breeding and performance have strongly suggested that he will be a master of the distance. Two years ngo Dormant won the Stonyhurst Handicap at Riccarton for his breeder, Mr R. H. W. Holden, but his future did not look bright because of chronic soreness. Mr Holden said h« did not want a lame horse so decided to put him up for auction last year, and he was purchased by Mr and Mrs Dentice. who left him with the Hastings trainer. W. D. Young. The open .air life was the life for Dormant, his trainer found. The Underwood gelding was put out in a padcock every day and was brought in at* night, and the treatment agreed with Dormant, which has developed outstanding form this season. He has won the Winter Oats and the Wellington Handicap under vastly different racing conditions on two visits to Trentham, and his final race trial for today’s race was last Saturday’s Canterbury Cup, in which he was a creditable third to Idaho and Golden Tan after being left in front half way through the race. Idaho today meets Dormant- and Golden Tan on much better terms than he did last week, and with 111 b less than weight-for-age last year’s New Zealand L terby winner has his big chance. But whether it is sound reasoning to argue tha't horses will finish in the same order at the end of two miles as after a mile and a halt is .open to question. It will be interesting to see whether Idaho’s run at the end of two miles is as correspondingly strong as the one he has produced at the end of a mile and a half. Golden Tan will put another notable chapter into the long history of the race if he can master 9st 61b on a track they may cramp his galloping There is a good sole of grass on the track, but Golden Tan felt the ground last week. On a track to suit him he would have beaten Idaho in the Canterbury Cup. But conditions are not very likely to be any more suitable today. r Hy-Spin, a consistent Awapunitrained Ruthless mare, is expected to run out the distance strongly enough to be given a chance. She will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Programme, the Nev/ Zealand Derby winner two years ago.' is still well down in the weights because he has just failed to round off his efforts in some good handicap races. Bis third behind Dormant and Hy-Spin in the Wellington Handicap last month was a performance of some merit. Programme will be ridden today by the apprentice, D. D. Gough. Cup Winner on Mlnfamun Strangely, two of the horses on the mimiirum have two-mile form better than most of the others. They are Reformed, whose record over the distance includes a win in the Wellington Cup and thirds in the Melbourne and New Zealand Cups; and Land Agent, which ran Lancaster to a nose in the Wellington Racing Club’s Autumn Handicap last season. Land Agent has a joint that has given some trouble, and has been

getting down on his heels, but his Woodville trainer, E. Ropiha. has him fit for today’s test. His chance looks very much brighter than Reformed’s. The Wingatui horse, now eight, has raced without dash for some time now. He will be ridden by J. Didham. Stronger representatives for Otago should be D. P. Wilson's pair. The Hob and The Lum. brother and sister which have done notable service for their Mosgiel breeder-owner-trainer. A. ,T. Stokes was engaged yesterday to ride The Hob. and R. J. Skelton will be on The Lum. which may be

the superior two-miler. The Riccarton apprentice. B. McDonald, has taken the mount on Trinidad. He was engaged for Solstice, but this Sun King gelding is fourth on the list of reserves, so his chance of getting a run looks slim. Toparca will be the first to reenter the.field if there is a scratching. If he gets a run he will be ridden by B. P. Wood. Josudi is second in. and last week s Fendalton Handicap winner, Chowder, is third on the list. Chowder made a big impression when he 3von last week. He would give the race much interest if he got a runi*"*‘ Good Record in Claadc A win for the smart Fair’s Fair colt Gulliver in the New Zealand Derby would, improve a good record in the classic for the Takanini trainer, H Dti ing re his notable career as a jockey Gray rode four Derby winners starting in 1909 with Elysian. Then there was Danube in 1910, and ■ lapse of 20 years until Cylinder. Ther. in 1931, he brought Bronze Eagle, a member of his own team, to Riccarton and rode this sonofLimond to victory. Gulliver, runner-up to Somerset Fair tn the Great Northern Guineas, gallopfed brilliantly at Trentham last week and again at Riccarton last Tuesday. His chance looks good, but he will not find Magic Carpet, Privy Council, and Nuclear easy to beat Selections:— Suburban High-weight: Braze, Bon Bolr, Super Mani.
